What Is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Too much blood glucose in your system damages the blood vessels that provide circulation to the retina of your eye along with other organs.  These blood vessels eventually become thickened and may start to leak. Left untreated, they may also begin to multiply, causing the retina to detach and cause hemorrhage.

How Does an Ophthalmologist Diagnose Diabetic Retinopathy?

The most common way our eye doctor diagnoses diabetic retinopathy is through yearly eye exams where we will dilate the pupils so that the back areas of the eye are more visible. If diabetic retinopathy is suspected, you may be asked to undergo fluorescein angiography. With this procedure, a dye is injected into your arm, and it will highlight the circulation in your eye, allowing our eye doctor to see where there are leakages or blocks.

What Symptoms Should I Discuss With My Eye Doctor?

In the early stages, you may have no symptoms. Over time, you may experience blurry vision, floating spots in your vision, and an inability to distinguish certain colors.

Will I Need Eye Surgery for Diabetic Retinopathy?

If caught early enough, your diabetic retinopathy can be treated with injections in your eye that help counteract the proteins that affect your eyes and reduce swelling. If caught at a later stage, several surgical procedures can be used to help relieve pressure and seal any leaks. In all cases, getting your diabetes under control is a major factor in the process.
